Mother of the Adversary

My latest entry into the creative arts' battle royale that is 's Rock-Off Challenge. The new theme: Satan's Mother.
Being just kind of demonology buff, I got my brain working overtime on this one. If you wanna get picky, and I frequently do, Lucifer and Satan can be seen as different entities, with Lucifer being the fallen angel, and Satan being just plain evil. He's frequently referred to as a dragon or serpent, and that was the idea I chose to embrace with this entry. She's a vicious, primaeval dragon spawned from the pits of unmade darkness beyond the reaches of Creation, but she's also very proud of her son and wishes he would call more often. Now just image what Dad must look like.
I wanted to try a slightly different technique from my norm with this one, and I've been trying to figure out how my idol (amoung many), Ben Templesmith, gets his stuff done. So, to that effect, I did most of the work for this by hand, using both black and white ink as well as gouache and graphite to get the desired effect of texturing. Then, it was off to photoshop. It was hard as hell to find a way to maintain the highlights while still coloring it in nicely. Color Burn layers were a reasonable solution, and I'm pretty darn happy with how it turned out.
Anyhow, wish me luck. Hopefully I'll be able to get maybe one more thing posted before I go back to school next monday.
